Book Mama Blog | Dick the Delightful Duck by Kaye Umansky

Have you ever met a duck who holds the door open and bakes pies for his friends? Well, then you haven't met Dick the Delightful Duck! This charming picture book by Kaye Umansky is a guaranteed giggle-fest for little ones, but it also packs a powerful message about friendship, empathy and even...bad days!

What Makes Dick So Delightful?

Dick is the best example of good manners. He's the kind of duck who says "please" and "thank you". He even helps with the dishes! But oh boy, even the most delightful ducks can have off days. One morning, Dick wakes up on the wrong side of the bed... or should we say, the wrong side of the nest? He's cranky, grumpy, and forgets his manners completely.

Friendship to the Rescue! The Power of Kindness

What unfolds is a hilarious scene of Dick's out-of-sorts behaviour. His friends are bewildered! However, Dick's true pals know just what to do. They don't get mad, they get compassionate and shower him with kindness; offering a yummy treat, a listening ear, and even a comfy place to relax, because grumpy ducks deserve self-care too! Witnessing this outpouring of compassion slowly melts the grump off Dick's face, reminding him, and us, of the power of kindness, even on the grouchiest of days.

The beauty of Dick the Delightful Duck lies in its simple message: everyone has bad days, but true friends are there for you, no matter what. We see the importance of empathy and understanding, as Dick's friends don't judge him for his bad mood. Instead, they respond with kindness, reminding him that even delightful ducks are allowed to be not-so-delightful sometimes.

Now, my little ones have a bit of "grumpy Gus" moment or day from time to time. So, when we got to the part where Dick realises he's been unkind, it was a perfect moment for discussions. We talked about how Dick apologised and how it made his friends feel good - reinforcing the need for the use of a few more "please", "thank yous" and “I’m sorry”.

This book is a winner for several reasons. We all loved reading "Dick the Delightful Duck." The rhyming text is catchy and fun to read aloud. Also, Ben Mantle's illustrations are bursting with bright colours and expressive characters keeping young audiences engaged. We especially enjoyed the funny faces Dick makes when he's grumpy! But most importantly, the story offers a gentle lesson about empathy and understanding. It teaches children that everyone has bad days, and sometimes the best way to help a friend is with a little extra kindness.
